Contribution Statement

Articulate what your thesis adds to the field

The "what is your contribution?" question is almost guaranteed. Your answer should be specific, honest, and memorable. Not "I contributed to the field of Japanese education" — that's too vague. Be concrete.

Your Three Contributions

1. Yomilink — An Open-Source Kit-Build Platform

A modern web-based platform that integrates the complete Kit-Build workflow with research administration (consent, pre/post-test, TAM, feedback, analytics, data export). Available under MIT license at github.com/elianiva/yomilink.

Why it matters: The original Kit-Build platform doesn't support integrated research workflows. Yomilink makes it possible to run a complete Kit-Build study from a single web application.

2. Pilot-Tested Procedure for Japanese

A validated three-session procedure (introduction → familiarization → main session) for applying Kit-Build to Japanese reading comprehension with beginner learners. Includes instrument calibration, data cleaning protocol, and analysis pipeline.

Why it matters: Kit-Build has been used in English/EFL but not in Japanese. This procedure provides a tested blueprint for future researchers.

3. Feasibility Evidence

Initial evidence that Kit-Build can be applied to Japanese reading comprehension: positive score direction (7.06 → 7.77/10), positive user acceptance (TAM above 3.5), and identification of ceiling effects and design considerations for future controlled studies.

Why it matters: This evidence directly informs the design of future controlled experiments and justifies further investment in this research direction.

How Examiners Probe Contributions

What's new about this? Kit-Build already exists.
The original Kit-Build platform doesn't support integrated research workflows like consent collection, pre/post-test delivery, or automated data export. Yomilink combines the Kit-Build core with a complete research administration pipeline. Additionally, Kit-Build has not been applied to Japanese reading comprehension before — this is the first study to explore that application.
Is Yomilink better than the original platform?
This study does not empirically compare the two platforms. Yomilink is a modern reimplementation with easier web-based deployment and integrated features, but I cannot claim it is superior without a direct comparison study.
Your results are modest. Is that really a contribution?
For a feasibility pilot, modest results are expected and appropriate. The contribution is not a proof of effectiveness but a validated procedure and initial evidence that justifies future controlled research. Many important research programs begin with pilots that establish feasibility before scaling to controlled experiments.
How would you extend this work?
The immediate next step is a controlled experiment comparing Kit-Build with a conventional reading activity, using parallel test forms and a larger sample. Medium-term extensions include delayed post-tests for retention, unaided comprehension conditions, and multiple proficiency levels.
